Traditionally, the discourse on energy security has centred on the security of the state, in particular, on the security of energy supply and the concomitant preoccupation with geostrategic issues. The rise of non-traditional security (NTS) threats, such as climate change and the impact of rising energy prices on populations, has however led to an awareness of the pressing need to broaden the framing of energy security. This volume thus re-visits energy security using the NTS lens, with a focus on the ways that governments and other actors have approached energy security challenges in some of Asia’s fastest-growing states, namely, Indonesia, Singapore, India and China. The cases presented in this volume highlight the complex issues surrounding energy security, with environmental concerns and socioeconomic development inextricably linked to questions of energy sustainability and vulnerability.
