COP30 masterclass: Climate in a divided world
The 2025 UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP30), scheduled for November 10-21 in Belém, Brazil, will convene amid significant geopolitical challenges and escalating difficulties in meeting global climate targets. Building on the success of the previous COP29 masterclass collaboration between ISIS Malaysia and the Third World Network (TWN), this conference aims to examine the outcomes of COP29 in Baku and set the stage for advancing international, regional and local synergies to benefit the form a comprehensive climate agenda for the developing world. Key objectives include examining national and regional climate agendas in the context of broader UNFCCC geopolitical developments and leveraging on Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship to unite stakeholders for ASEAN and South-South advocacy. The anticipated outcome is a comprehensive report summarising conference discussions, stakeholder perspectives and key findings, with recommendations for Malaysian ministries to inform national negotiation positions for COP30.
