SUMMARY:Launching of BPO Bangladesh Peace Observatory
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS BPO?\nThe Bangladesh Peace Observatory (BPO) is a research facility housed at the Centre for\nGenocide Studies (CGS)\, University of Dhaka. BPO is a component of UNDP’s project on the\n“Partnerships for a Tolerant\, Inclusive Bangladesh” (PTIB) – an initiative to understand and\nprevent violence and extremism in Bangladesh. \nOver decades\, Bangladesh has experienced many forms of political and non-political violence.\nLimited data systems fail to highlight the full range violence trends over time\, location\, and\nimpact. Absence of reliable\, structured\, and accessible open source data is a major knowledge\ngap restricting the ability of public institutions\, civil society\, academia\, media and development\nagencies from effectively discussing and addressing violence\, or conducting independent critical\nresearch. \nAs a response\, the BPO has been established at the CGS\, University of Dhaka\, in 2016 to\nprovide data\, mapping trends\, research\, and facilitate training programs to understand the state of\nviolence and its narratives in Bangladesh. \nWHO WILL BE USING THE BPO?\nThe initiative seeks to support a wide range of actors – government institutions\, academia\, civil\nsociety organizations\, and the media – in making better public policy decisions\, tailored\ninterventions and programming\, enhanced research\, and effective advocacy campaigning for\nsocial cohesion and peace based on data\, evidence\, research\, and critical analysis. \nOBJECTIVES OF BPO:\nThe launching aims to introduce the BPO platform\, its content\, use\, and utilities to the\nrepresentatives of various stakeholders. The organizers of the event – CGS and UNDP Dhaka –\nhave targeted policy makers\, government officials\, military personals\, law enforcement officials\,\nNGO officials\, civil society representatives\, media persons\, academics\, and researchers\, mainly\nto share the platform and have it known to the public. The manner in which the BPO can serve\nthe interests of the stakeholders\, prioritize policy interventions\, and support critical research on\nthe state of violence in Bangladesh will be demonstrated during the launching of the platform. \n
