The Northeast region of India has been both a centre of violent conflict as well as a site for peace settlements. The special volume of Peace Prints on Peace Accords in India’s Northeast through a Gender Lens examines how women have engaged or not engaged with the trajectory of the many conflicts as they transitioned dynamically across the continuum of violent combat, negotiation, mediation, agreements and peace settlements among multiple actors. The contributions to the journal focus largely on the states of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Manipur. They speak to the competing demands of homeland and the competing resource politics that has often ‘excluded’ women and their concerns. The academic articles and reflections from the field point to the need to look at women beyond protective stereotypes. They highlight the importance of engaging women as political subjects before, during and after peace settlements.
