Building Peaceful and Inclusive Societies in the Asia-Pacific.
10 Aug 2017 - 28 Aug 2017
Peace Boat is pleased to announce a 19-day Global University Special Programme to be held from Tokyo to Yangon in August 2017, with the theme “Building Peaceful and Inclusive Societies in the Asia-Pacific”.
Toward Societies that “Leave No One Behind”
How do we achieve peace and justice in society? This question is more pressing today when the tendency to secure safety by division and exclusion -rather than cooperation and inclusion -seems to be spreading globally. When we turn on the news, anti-immigration rhetoric is heard everywhere and intolerance to others seems to be growing stronger. This year, Peace Boat’s Global University will focus on SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) 16, which underlines that peace, justice and effective, accountable and inclusive institutions are at the core of sustainable development. Many countries in the Asia-Pacific still face protracted armed conflict and violence, and far too many people struggle as a result of weak institutions and a lack of access to justice, information and other fundamental freedoms.Drawing on actual case studies from the Asia-Pacific region, this programme will expose participants to issues related to poverty and discrimination, environmental issues, migration, and conflict. Inviting Khin Ohmar (Democracy and Human Rights Activist) and Oshidari Kenro (Former United Nations World Food Programme Regional Director for Asia) as the navigators, participants will explore the key question of how build peaceful and inclusive societies in the Asia-Pacific.
